Health Care Is Not Funny

Stuff White People Like is funny here and there. Entry #94, declaring that white people like free health care, is not funny. It's not funny at all:

Though [white people's] passion for national health care runs deep, it is important to remember that white people are most in favor of it when they are healthy. They love the idea of everyone have [sic] equal access to the resources that will keep them alive, that is until they have to wait in line for an MRI.
It's not funny because the health care problems in this country are not funny. Health care is the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in the United States, and there is nothing funny about that. It's not funny when people stay in jobs they hate because they don't want to lose their health insurance. It's not funny when people can't get private health insurance at any price because of pre-existing conditions. It's not funny when people walk around with treatable medical conditions because they don't have a personal fortune large enough to cover the expenses. It's not funny that people in this country have to make choices between seeking medical treatment and buying food. It's not funny that health care consumes a larger share of the USA's GDP, and costs considerably more per capita, and yet produces poorer results than otherwise comparable nations, including, crucially, the exclusion of more than 40 million people from its "system." It's not funny that people in the USA have been systematically duped into believing that paying for an essential service through taxes is somehow worse than paying more money for less of the same essential service.

It's not fucking funny at all, and I don't give a shit if that makes me the butt of that asinine blog's monotonous joke.

Making light of health care is still not funny even in light of the fact that Michael Moore made a documentary about it, which the SWPL blog is quick to note. I know Michael Moore is fat, and I understand what people mean when they say he's annoying. No amount of excess body weight on Michael Moore will ever make US health care funny.

Health care in the USA is a disgrace. Shame on anyone who wants to laugh at it.
