Pledges and Bullshit

That Red Hot Chili Peppers guy ruins this video, which has become part of an endless and almost completely fake right-wing panic over creeping totalitarianism:

Red Hot Chili Peppers guy pledges "to be of service to Barack Obama"? Why? What, specifically, is he pledging in this connection? In fairness, this is not the only thing he pledged in the video -- he also sputtered something about funk. Heroin is powerful drug. Sigh.

I also don't like the end, when Demi Moore -- the only one to speak these words, it should be noted -- pledges to be "a servant to our president." Servant is a very loaded word; moreover, the distinction between president qua constitutional office and president qua Obama is not clear enough; above all, pledges should never be made lightly. They're pledges!

Lastly, I don't like how this video perpetuates the notion that hope somehow belongs to Barack Obama, as though the word and the idea were invented for his campaign posters. President Obama does not own hope, either as an individual or a constitutional officer; far from that, currently he is wiping his ass with several of the hopes he raised as a candidate, including many of the ideals and goals expressed in the better parts of this video.

With all of that said, suffice to say we're still several leaps away from reprising 1930s Germany.
