30-Day Music Meme - Day 01 - Favorite Song

I do not blog on tumblr and I wasn't tagged, and yet that which isn't worth doing isn't worth doing properly, so I hereby begin the 30-Day Music Meme as seen on tumblr's The Devil's Harlot blog, which goes as follows:

* Day 01 — Your favourite song: My favorite song is "Remember the Mountain Bed," written by Woody Guthrie and performed by Wilco and Billy Bragg. On top of a number of personal resonances I won't belabor here, the song achieves what so many love songs only try for, or try to seem to try for, which is to say something true, revealing, and even dangerous about love:

There in the shade and hid from the sun we freed our minds and learned
Our greatest reason for being here, our bodies moved and burned
There on our mountain bed of leaves we learned life's reason why
The people laugh and love and dream, they fight, they hate to die
That verse is the culmination of verses that put lovers in a natural setting of limbs, roots, leaves, and sky -- the conventional idea that love happens in nature and chafes against the demands of civilization -- and takes the side of nature and love to the fullest. The song barely hints that the lovers are human; except for one remark, everything in the song is grounded in the body or the unspoken memory. It inhabits love rather than talking about it.

Beyond all that, it is achingly beautiful.

The rest of the days will go as follows, or so I am told ...
