Stunning Math

Tom Friedman does the math to calculate the result of aggressive nihilism and palsied advocacy -- zero:

We’ve basically decided to keep pumping greenhouse gases into Mother Nature’s operating system and take our chances that the results will be benign — even though a vast majority of scientists warn that this will not be so. Fasten your seat belts. As the environmentalist Rob Watson likes to say: “Mother Nature is just chemistry, biology and physics. That’s all she is.” You cannot sweet-talk her. You cannot spin her. You cannot tell her that the oil companies say climate change is a hoax. No, Mother Nature is going to do whatever chemistry, biology and physics dictate, and “Mother Nature always bats last, and she always bats 1.000,” says Watson. Do not mess with Mother Nature. But that is just what we’re doing.
This is one of those areas where people of the future are going to look back in amazement and disgust: the presidency and large congressional majorities go to the party that advocates dealing with the threat of climate change; a four-month period of that electoral alignment is dominated by a daily reminder, complete with live-feed video footage, of the horrors and risks of doing nothing; an ever more untenable and unpopular two-front war across the world magnifies the urgency of stopping this madness; and the final outcome of all that is, somehow, nothing.

All I can say to the people reading this years from now is that large numbers of people living today share your amazement and disgust. I can add that I realize that does not help at all.

If that asswipe Friedman can figure out that we are screwed, then we must be screwed! To bad that asswipe can't figure more things out like cap and trade was an insufficient step, and Iraq, global capitalism, the guy is lost!

Sheldon, right you are. Friedman's musings on economics and the war(s) are verbal emetics, but on climate change, he's almost completely right all the time.

Everytime I see him in that black sweater I remember the "suck on this" interview with Charlie Rose, and I want to puke! He can really be an idiot 99.9% of the time. I do give him credit for picking out that good quote about mother nature.

Sheldon, Sheldon, you're preaching the choir! Search this precious, precious blog for "Friedman Units" and/or "mustache" and you'll see some scorn. I also marvel at his willingness to pile cliches, stock phrases, and buzzwords into his columns. I thought professional writer people were supposed to avoid that? Not TF!

E.g., "fasten your seat belts" and "Mother Nature's operating system," the latter of which is a hybridization of old-timey and slightly newer stock phrases.
